One of the components of our corporate strategy is to invest in the next generation of construction workers.
Summer internships are part of our internal commitment and our wider membership of the 5% club to create 'earn and learn' skilled positions. This provides a great opportunity for students from non-traditional backgrounds to gain great work experience during their summer break. We hope to be able to roll out this programme over other term breaks including Easter.
Our internships receive similar training to full time employees, with a paid orientation day before their first formal day of work. They are also provided with training courses (one per week - depending on the arrangement) and uniforms so that they can feel part of the team.
While being supported and guided, interns are given real tasks and work with real clients. All of our interns are provided with hands on training and external high quality training with certification at the end of their courses.
We are grateful that we were able to continue to offer this opportunity for the selected candidate even in a covid-19 environment.
I have just finished my last year of secondary school at Polam Hall. I studied my 10 chosen GCSE subjects along with the mandatory lessons for 3 years. These included all STEM subjects (foundation and higher level), Art, Geography and German as my chosen language. I enjoyed studying higher level subjects because it allows me to challenge myself and push my brain to the limits although I found it very difficult at times, especially with Maths.
While at school, I applied to be a Senior School Prefect and Polam Scholar and was accepted along with 6 other students in my year. This opportunity allowed me to have meetings with the head teacher of my school and have mature discussions to evaluate how to improve the well-being of students within the school itself.
Outside of school, I also do a couple of extra curricular activities. These include horse riding, badminton, chess and I also play piano. I really enjoy doing them because it allows my brain to rest and do the activities that I enjoy without worrying about grades and exams. In my opinion, having a well-balanced work-play ratio is key for good physical and mental health and without it both academic and artistic sides to a person would become flawed.
1. Self- Sufficiency and Independence
One of the reasons why I enjoy working at Hinds Building Services is that I am able to be liberated when needed but also have a vast amount of support from everyone if I am ever struggling with new tasks. For example, when given a number of tasks to complete throughout the day, I have the freedom and the ability to be independent and explore different ways to conduct my day and finalise the instructions which strengthens my management skills. However, if I ever begin to struggle with something, I don’t understand such as a new computer programming system, I am not hesitant to ask for help from other colleagues and am guaranteed assistance.
2. Working Environment
Although the working day does not have a substantial time difference compared to a school day, having to do more work compacted into a certain amount of time can be daunting and tiring at first but because the company provides a calming and quiet environment, it allows me to be able to concentrate with ease. When days are slightly busier and there are a lot of phone calls, emails etc, I am given a choice to go outdoors for fresh air allowing me to clear my head and work more efficiently than before.

Janae completed the course in 'Presentation Skills' successfully, receiving her certificate of achievement. This entailed independent working through a guided high quality online course which was followed by an examination. She passed on her first attempt. Well done.
“Apart from meeting a business case for diversity and inclusion in the construction industry, it is simply essential that the construction industry aims to become increasingly diverse.”
